EKWUNIFE DECRIES THE STATE OF ROADS IN THE COUNTRY, CALLS FOR ADEQUATE FUNDING OF FERMA

The Senator representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, Uche Ekwunife PhD, has once again decried the state of roads in the country, calling on the federal government to take pragmatic steps to rehabilitate strategic roads in different parts of the country.

While addressing the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, Ekwunife said that Nigerians are losing their lives to bad roads. She also lamented that the poor state of the roads is affecting economic activities.

"Mr President to say that the roads in Nigeria is a nightmare is an understatement. The roads in Nigeria are in shambles. The Federal Roads Maintenance Agency remains one of the most important agencies of government, but sadly the agency is not funded to carry out its constitutional obligations, which is constant maintenance of our highways in Nigeria."

"Construction of roads is one thing, maintenance is another. Nigerians yearn for roads maintenance. Almost all the roads in the country are impassable. Kidnappers, armed-robbers and badits have turned the bad portions of our roads into their catchment areas. Something must be done urgently. The Federal government can partner with the state governments to address the challenges of roads maintenance. Our people are suffering", Ekwunife passionately stated.

"Mr President, Nigerians are looking up to you because you have the garvel of appropriation. Kindly use it to ensure that FERMA is adequately funded to maintain our roads. Nigerians are losing their lives", the grassroots-friendly lawmaker told the President of the Senate.

African Bank President Adesine Ask Buhari Government

African Bank President Adesine Ask Buhari Government

The Debt Management Office (DMO) recorded the country’s total public debt at N35.46 trillion at the end of the second quarter of 2021.

The President of the African Development Bank, Akinwunmi Adesina, has asked the Muhammadu Buhari-led government to decisively resolve the nation’s debt challenges to trigger economic growth.

As of September, the Debt Management Office (DMO) recorded the country’s total public debt at N35.46trillion at the end of the second quarter of 2021

According to the 2022 budget proposal of N16.39trillion, N3.61trillion has been earmarked to service debt for the year, representing 22 per cent of the total expenditure and 35.6 per cent of the total revenue.

Speaking at the Mid-Term Ministerial Performance Review retreat, in Abuja, Adesina expressed worry over the country’s source of revenue for debt servicing.

He, however, acknowledged that the debt-to-GDP ratio remained “moderate”, adding that the economic resurgence was possible when Nigeria removes “structural bottlenecks” that limit the revenue-earning potential of non-oil sectors.

Adesina said, “Nigeria must decisively tackle its debt challenges. The issue is not about the debt-to-GDP ratio, as Nigeria’s debt-to-GDP ratio at 35 per cent is actually still moderate. The big issue is how to service the debt and what that means for resources for domestic investments needed to spur faster economic growth.

“The debt service to revenue ratio for Nigeria is high at 73 per cent. Things will improve as oil prices recover, but the situation has revealed the vulnerability of Nigeria’s economy. To have an economic resurgence, we need to fix the structure of the economy and address some basic fundamentals.

“Nigeria’s challenge is revenue concentration, as the oil sector accounts for roughly 75 percent of export revenue while according to the statistics of the Central bank 50 percent of all government revenue.

“What is needed for sustained growth and economic resurgence is to remove the structural bottlenecks that limit the productivity and the revenue earning potential of the huge non-oil sectors.”

Governor Conveys Held Hostage By IPOP Militants

Gunmen suspected to be militants of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) held the convoy of Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State hostage on Tuesday.

The incident happened as the attackers disrupted the campaign rally of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) at Odata Secondary School in Ihiala Local Government Area of the State.

“The governor’s convoy was held for about one hour, while there were gunshots all over,” a resident told Daily Trust.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed that there was attack in Ihiala.

In a statement, Ikenga said operatives of Anambra Police Command repelled the attack at Odata.

According to him, exhibits recovered from the attackers were One AK 47 rifle, Two Magazine with 30 rounds of ammunition, One lexus 350 jeep, one Rav 4 jeep, one Mercedes Benz and a Toyota Corolla.

He said preliminary investigation revealed that the hoodlums started shooting sporadically when they arrived Odata Secondary School but security operatives took control.

He said that normalcy has been restored in the area and operations is ongoing for possible arrest of the fleeing gang members

Reacting to the attack, the Anambra state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment Mr. C.Don Adunuba, said a combined team of policemen and soldiers repelled the attack.

According to him, gunmen came on various motorcycles and in three vehicles, namely, a Toyota Lexus 350 ES with registration number EKY 765 EX, Toyota RAV4 with number JJJ 434FP and a Ford van whose number could not ascertained at the time of this report because it caught fire during the exchange of bullets between the gunmen and security forces.

.He said the gunmen, unable to withstand the superior fire power of the security operatives ran into the premises of Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, which is directly opposite the campaign ground.

“If the gunmen had not run into the hospital which is a very delicate place to shoot any person, the security men would have gunned all of them down them,” he said.

He said the Anambra State Police Command has requested the people in the area to help look out for people with gunshots and report them.

He also asked hospitals and other health facilities in both Ihiala Local Government Area and neighbouring communities in Imo State to report persons with gunshot injuries.

Meanwhile, Obiano has commended police officers and soldiers who repelled the attack.

Speaking to journalists at Atani in Ogbaru LGA where he led a large crowd of APGA faithful to welcome the APGA governorship candidate in the forthcoming election, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, Obiano described the response of the security men as professional and patriotic.

In the same vein, Soludo, who lost three policemen guarding him when he was attacked on March 31 in his hometown of Isuofia, Aguata local Government Area, while addressing the youth, lauded the security forces for bravery.

“These security men and women in Anambra State lay down their lives for us and they do their best because of the encouragement they receive from the security-conscious state government, among other factors.”

“We expect more professional exhibition as days go by and the election date approaches.”

Pandora Papers: How I made money —Peter Obi

A former governor of Anambra State and vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2019 general elections, Peter Obi, has said he was a trader who ventured into banking before he became a governor.

Obi said this during an interview on The Morning Show, an Arise TV programme that aired on Monday.

This is amid allegations from a report inspired by Pandora Papers which listed him as one of the personalities who clandestinely set up and operated businesses overseas, including in notorious tax and secrecy havens in the ways that breached Nigerian laws.

Obi had reacted to the report, saying, “I did not in any respect whatsoever violate any law before, during and after my stewardship as the governor of Anambra.”

He added, “I think that the authors displayed ignorance on matters of Trust and International Investment Practices.”

Speaking during the Arise TV programme monitored by The PUNCH, Obi answered a question on how he made money before becoming a governor.

He said he ran a planned market management company, adding that he “was the sole importer of Heinz salad cream, just to give you an example of one company.

“I was the sole engineer of South African Breweries. I was also bringing in Ovaltine.

“The company I was with before, I left it for my brother who took over and paid me off. That company became the Next Cash and Carry which you see in Port Harcourt and Abuja.”

He further revealed that he used to import wine back in the days, adding that “everyone knew I was a very big trader.”

He said, “I had a very good business but went into banking.

“I was sitting in the board of three banks and was the chairman of one before I became a governor.”

Obi also revealed that he had major shares in the banks where he was a board member.

He, however, stated that joining politics made him poorer even though he doesn’t regret the decision he took
