Enugu Govt decries inimical land ownership claims against state Housing policy

By Dennis Agbo

The Enugu State Housing Development Corporation, ESHDC, has frowned at the claims by some community members where the state government’s numerous housing estates are springing up.

With particular reference, the ESHDC frowned at the capitulations from some individuals in Ugwuoba, Oji River local government Housing estate.

The Housing authority said that some mischievously sponsored publications were deceptive and inimical to sustainable rural development.

It noted that many at times, the reason for concentration of social amenities and infrastructure in Urbana areas may not actually be the fault of government officials but the unfortunate refusal of some Communities to embrace innovations, which makes such a community to remain backward and live in regret.

“In many cases, such decisions are being taken by few individuals who are after their own personal gains as against the overall interest of the Community. They could only achieve this through cheap propaganda, malicious and deceptive publications.

“Our attention was drawn to one of such recent online publications where they accused the state Housing Development Corporation of forcefully acquiring their ancestral land, asking the state government to leave their ancestoral land alone,” said the Corporation’s Public Relations Officer, …..

The corporation maintained that the publication was not only fallacious but lacks the consent and authority of the good people of Ugwuoba ommunity.

“That the land in question is a parcel of land lying along Enugu-Onitsha Express road, measuring approximately 150 hectares which was diligently and duly acquired in 1995 by the then military Administrator, Col Mike Torre and handed over to the Enugu State Housing Development Corporation with the certificate of occupancy of a dated 6th June 1996 and registered as no.38 page 38 in vol. 1071 land registry in the office at Enugu.

Prior to the issuance of the Certificate of occupancy, there was notice of revocation which was properly published in the government gazette no. ISSN(1116 -2032) vol. 5 page 12 in notice no. 18 official gazette no.  5 vol 4 of 03/6/1999.

“The corporation has commenced development of the Land since 1995 immediately after the acquisition and some buildings were at different levels before the change of government which led to the suspension of work at the Estate,” the PRO clarified.

She said that that the Corporation wonders why the sponsored publication is springing up 26 years after the land acquisition, adding that if not for change in adminstrations, the estate would have been a completed project in the past 26 years.

“All the villages including Okpuno, Agolo, Eziachi,  Anaocha and Nkpoga are beckoning on government to hurry up to develop the land while few people from Obinagu are busy trying to lay exclusive bogus claim over the entire land and at the same time tampering with the the buildings which were erected by the Corporation.

“However, irrespective of all the distractions and the frivolities coming from self-acclaimed community leaders, the Corporation is willing to listen to the geniue grievances of the bonafide people of Obinagu  as part of our host communities.”

The Corporation said it’s determined to spread development to rural areas including Oji River and other places and cannot allow enemies of progress to interfere with the good plans of the state government.

“The Corporation is using this medium to sound a note of warning to the distrsctors who are deceiving the public that we shall not hesitate to employ legal action against those people for criminal activities, trespass, false  information and libel if they fail to desist from such act. The sponsors of these falsehood will soon be unmasked and their true identities and mischievous intentions revealed.

“The general public should not only resist the devilish ideas of these selfish cancarworms, but should also know that spreading fake news on the media had become an exposed strategy,” ESHDC cautioned.

I’ll relocate to U.S. after my tenure, Obiano replies EFCC

Governor Willie Obiano

Governor Willie Obiano has told the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that he will be relocating to his United States base when he leaves office next March.

Reacting yesterday to Wednesday’s placement of the governor on a watch list by the anti-graft agency, Anambra State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Don Adinuba, accused EFCC of acting a script.

He said his principal, currently out of the country, never disguised when he embarked on the foreign trip.

The commissioner said the governor has made it public that he would relocate to his U.S. residence at the end of his tenure.

“Nigerians were dismayed that the EFCC went a new low on Wednesday, November 24, 2021, when it sponsored media reports claiming that it has placed Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State on its watch list. The EFCC provided no details of how Governor Obiano has been placed on its watch list but made a reference to a letter it purportedly wrote on November 15, 2021, to the Comptroller General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) asking it to inform the anti-graft agency anytime the governor is travelling out of the country,” Adinuba stated.

FG lied; ‘high scale secret employments’ ongoing in civil service — Senate

Chris Ngige, Minister of Labour and Employment

THE Senate, Wednesday, raised the alarm over what it termed “high scale secret employments” going on the civil service in spite of claims by the Federal Government that it had placed embargo on job placement.

The Senate, while lamenting the situation, challenged the Federal Government to come out with evidence on job embargo.

The lawmakers insisted that that top civil servants engaged in secret job placements, just as it has demanded that the Federal Government step up process of employment to engage millions of Nigerians.

Speaking in Abuja while submitting the report of the Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs on the 2022 Budget to the Appropriations Committee, Chairman of Federal Character Committee, Senator Danjuma La’ah(PDP-Kaduna South) said that government should, as a matter of urgency, ensure recruitment of eligible Nigerians into public service.

Senator La’ah said “many people are being secretly employed but those in charge are claiming that there is embargo on employment.

I don’t know where they got that from. We have been asking them. There is no embargo anywhere.

“Some of the officials of government are so myopic that they decide to take advantage of the situation.

I  have been challenging those who are engaging in secret recruitments, claiming there is embargo, to show us where they got the information from.

“This is the time for them to increase their personnel cost and make provision for employment.

People are retiring voluntarily but we don’t know how they are being replaced. We must know the particular number of people they want to employ.

“We discovered that young Nigerians who graduated from higher institutions some 15 years ago had yet to gain employment.

The development had aggravated insecurity all over the places including insurgency, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities.

“Some people are taking advantage of the situation (embargo on employment) but our committee is desirous of doing the right thing.

“We are determined that there should be jobs for the graduates that we have in this country, no matter what it takes.

“Our committee has been going to ministries, departments and agencies of government that they must start recruitment instead of doing secret replacements.

“We had even asked them to increase their personnel cost in their budgets so that they could employ people.”

Monday, November 22, 2021, is not a Work-free Day in Anambra State

1.      The Anambra State Government wishes to remind all individuals and organizations in the state that Monday, November 22, 2021, is not a work-free day in the state. This reminder has become imperative in view of the tendency of some people to observe in the last few months every Monday as a work-free day, in compliance with the directive by some non-state actors in an effort to press the Federal Government to free the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who is standing trial for some charges in Abuja brought by the federal administration.

2.      The IPOB leadership has suspended the directive requiring people to stay at home every Monday which it said would start from Monday, September 15, 2021, throughout the Southeast geopolitical zone. The IPOB leadership has in the last few days reiterated the suspension, warning that any person who still tries to enforce the earlier decision is on his or her own and will, therefore, be dealt with accordingly. The IPOB leadership has kept every pledge it has made, including rescinding its decision to thwart the November 6 gubernatorial election in Anambra State. In fact, far from disrupting the election, IPOB encouraged the people of Anambra State to come out in their numbers and exercise their democratic right on November 6; the election is now recognized as easily the most peaceful and the fairest election since the State was created in 1991. In consideration of the high level of responsibility displayed by the IPOB leadership, a group of Igbo leaders, including worthy sons of Anambra State, met President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, at State House, Abuja, on Friday, November 19, 2021 to plead that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu be released and the issues around his arrest and trial resolved in a political way.

3.      The people of Anambra State are, therefore, enjoined to go about their normal business every Monday. They should not entertain any fear of disruption of their work or any kind of harassment from any quarters from Monday, November 22, 2021.

4.      The month of December is almost here. It is the month mankind marks the birth of Jesus Christ, and it is defined by peace, unity, love, solidarity and merrymaking. This period also ushers in a new year which itself is a festive period. Ndi Anambra, like many other Nigerians, use the period to launch community and church development projects, hold cultural festivals and conduct important personal, family and community events such as marriages, weddings and title taking. All this requires a lot of money. What is more, parents and guardians pay the educational fees of their children and wards during this period, thus making January the longest month in the year, as it is described in common parlance.

5.      It is in the interest of our people that all markets, all businesses, all offices and all schools in Anambra State operate fully every Monday, with effect from Monday, November 22, 2021. All our people are once again assured that they will not face any kind of molestation on any day of the week from any quarters henceforth.

God bless Anambra State, the Light of the Nation.

Resins I’ve not been commissioning projects – Ortom

Politics

Governor Samuel Ortom

By Peter Duru – Makurdi

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Sunday gave reasons he had not been commissioning the projects executed by his administration in the last six years.

He explained that the funds earmarked for the commissioning of such projects could be used to execute more development projects in parts of the state, hence his decision to ignore the idea.

The Governor who made this known shortly after inspecting ongoing construction work at the Government Comprehensive Secondary School, Naka, Gwer West Local Government Area, LGA, of the state said if it were the general consensus that it should be done, he would have no choice but to commence the commissioning of projects in the state.

He said: “for me it is not about commissioning of projects because I noticed that each time I want to commission a project, protocol will come with a list of several expenditure, you pay for this and that.

“So I believe that what I will spend in commissioning projects will help me add another development project to the society; that is my take.

“The commissioning of projects should be the siting of those projects and completing them. That is my belief about projects.

“But since people believe in the commissioning of projects, maybe I would have to change my mind about that and start to commission my several projects spread across the state so that they will be appreciated.

“I must say that I am always very surprised when the opposition claim that we have not done projects. We can all see the roads, schools, health facilities, name them in every sectors and all over the state.

“Even in the area of security you can see what we have been able to do. You can see where we were from 2015 and where we are today.

“We have done so well, we are gradually fishing out the deadly criminals operating in the state so that development can come. And I can assure you that in the next few weeks if you ask a criminal to come to Benue whether armed herders or anyone, they would decline.”

Opposed to Bitcoin Payments, Bank of Russia Says State Should Not Stimulate Spread of Cryptocurrencies

News

Bank of Russia Reiterates Negative Stance on Cryptocurrencies, Legalization of Bitcoin

A “responsible state” should not stimulate the proliferation of cryptocurrencies, according to Elvira Nabiullina, chair of the Central Bank of Russia (CBR). The head of the monetary authority made the declaration in the lower house of the Russian parliament, the State Duma.

The high-ranking official emphasized that the bank has “an extremely negative attitude towards cryptocurrencies” which she described as “private currencies pretending to be money.” Quoted by the Tass news agency, Nabiullina elaborated:

At the same time, people need to be given an alternative, the governor acknowledged. Bank of Russia is trying to do that through its projects. “I have already spoken about the digital ruble – in our opinion, this should develop,” Elvira Nabiullina added

The head of Russia’s monetary policy regulator remarked that the CBR is not against digital currencies in general, provided they are not used for “shadow operations.” Nabiullina pointed out, however, that Bank of Russia continues to oppose the legalization of bitcoin as a payment instrument in the country.

In response to the rising popularity of cryptocurrencies and the significant increase in electronic payments, the Russian central bank has stepped up its efforts to create a digital version of the national fiat, the ruble. This year, the regulator formed a digital ruble pilot group with over a dozen financial institutions. A prototype of the CBDC platform will be launched in December, with trials scheduled to commence in January.

The digital ruble is what the Russians need as it will facilitate cheap and reliable non-cash payments, Nabiullina recently told participants in an international banking forum. According to the country’s latest financial market development strategy, the state-issued digital currency should prevent citizens from using ‘money surrogates,’ a term used by officials in Moscow to describe cryptocurrencies.

A former justice of the Court Of Appeal, Chinwe Iyizoba, has commended Anambra State Governor, Willie Obiano, for rewarding the female voter, Mrs Eunice Onuegbusi, who turned down a bribe of N5,0000 from party agents during the November 6 election in the state.

Iyizoba who spoke through a non-governmental organisation, African Women Forum for Good Governance, said there were other exemplary women like Mrs Onuegbusi in Anambra and Nigeria at large.

Onuegbusi, who hails from Ukwulu community in the Dunukofia Local Government Area of the state, was seen in a viral video during the just concluded governorship election rejecting a bribe of N5,000, opting instead to vote according to her conscience.

Nigeria vs Cape Verde: Eagles should look to Ronaldo’s Portugal for inspiration

The Eagles need just a point to progress, but the team must have the mindset to win to be on the safer side.

On Sunday, Portugal started ahead of their opponents, Serbia, and needed only a draw in the race for a ticket to Qatar 2022.

However, despite scoring first in the second minute, Portugal lost 2-1 at home to crash into the playoffs.

This is just one example as history is replete with teams who need just a point for progress in qualifiers and tournaments but fall at that hurdle because of a relaxed posture and not enough intensity from the team needing just a draw.

Tuesday’s clash between Nigeria and Cape Verde is based on the assumption [and rightly so] that the Super Eagles need just a point as they lead Group C with 12 points while their opponents, the Blue Sharks have 10 and need to win to progress to the last round of CAF 2022 World Cup qualifiers.

This is the first time-especially in Gernot Rohr’s reign as Super Eagles gaffer that the Eagles have not qualified for the next round with a game to spare. That will bring its own pressure as the Eagles look at their last home clash-the loss to the Central African Republic. That result is what has made Tuesday’s match a must-not-lose encounter.

Based on the way the qualifiers have panned out, the Eagles have scored in four of their five previous matches and conceded in two. They have scored eight goals and conceded two. Cape Verde have scored in all of their five qualifiers but have kept just one clean sheet in the qualifiers.

In a post-match interview after the 2-0 win over Liberia in Morocco, Rohr revealed that the pressure not to lose is a good one as it will keep his players on their toes.

“Yeah, of course, we have to make a result not to lose the final game. But we are at home. It’s good to have pressure for my players.”

“If they believe it’s easy if they believe it’s done, it’s always difficult. So it’s good to play with pressure. So we will be able to honour this situation to handle it like we did all the time.”

The Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa added, “No one is thinking of a draw. It is a must-win match, as far as we are concerned.

Musa, who scored his 15th goal for the Eagles in the 2-0 victory over Liberia on Saturday, added: “The mindset is to win and reach the final round of the World Cup series without any story.”

The match is slated for the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, and the kickoff is 5 p.m.
