“It’s going really okay. The accreditation process was seamless; people are conducting themselves very well. I think democracy has come to stay in Nigeria,” Makinde said earlier.

Labour Party Condemns INEC’s Omission Of Party on Ballot Papers In Lagos

Nigerianewslite

politics

The Labour Party (LP) in Lagos State on Thursday condemned INEC for omitting the party’s logo from the Senate and House of Representatives ballot papers ahead of Saturday’s general elections.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that INEC took delivery of sensitive materials for the presidential and national assembly elections scheduled for Saturday on Wednesday.

At a news conference in Ikeja, Lagos State LP Chairperson Pastor Dayo Ekong called on INEC to reschedule the election until the party’s candidates were included on the ballots.

According to her, as Nigerians prepare to go to the polls on Saturday to elect a new president and members of the Senate and House of Representatives, the LP is decrying the flagrant exclusion of the candidates of the Labour Party National Assembly from the ballot papers.

Ekong called out INEC to either correct what she described as an anomaly or reschedule the National Assembly elections.

“This malicious “error” was found out this morning in Lagos by me and my team of executive members during the routine inspection of election materials.

“It was at the time of inspection that it was discovered that the Labour Party was not listed for the election for the Senate and House of Representatives in Lagos State. This is unacceptable and a wicked way of disenfranchising Lagos electorates.

“It is unimaginable that for the elections slated for Saturday, Feb. 25, the Lagos electorate will only vote for the Labour Party presidential candidate as INEC made no provision for the election of the party’s Senate and House of Representatives candidates.

“We cannot accept this as we do not believe that INEC made a mistake but rather, a deliberate, malicious and intentional act by INEC at disenfranchising our Supporters from exercising their civic rights which is unacceptable,” Ekong said.

She added that further checks on the INEC website revealed that the list of names of the members of the Lagos Labour Party National Assembly was not uploaded “even as the list and court orders for same were duly submitted to INEC and acknowledged.”

“You will all recall how we have severally pointed out the bias displayed by the current INEC REC in Lagos State towards our Party and his increasing attacks on our leaders that have constantly pointed out these biases in the past and current onslaught on our Party.

“Is this the result of the culmination of those attacks?

“We call on all stakeholders, foreign observers, lovers of democracy, and the international community to quickly wade in and call INEC to do the needful,” Ekong said.

NAN reports that the event was attended by the party’s governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, other candidates, and state executive committee members.

The vice-presidential candidate of Labour Party, Datti Baba-Ahmed, has said that the All Progressives Congress, APC, has fallen out of the alignment of winning election in Nigeria over its choice of a Muslim-Muslim presidential ticket.

According to Datti, such a presidential ticket will not work in Nigeria, considering all the ethnoreligious complexities of the country.

The LP Vice presidential candidate believes that as much as fifteen presidential candidates going into next Saturday’s election have fallen behind, while two of the remaining three, the APC and the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party, have fallen out of alignment of what it takes to win elections in Nigeria.

It is no longer news that the APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu, who is a Yoruba Muslim, is running for the position with another Muslim from Borno, North East.

“Why today Tinubu is not the vice president of Nigeria is the same reason he cannot be president,” Baba-Ahmed said during a live appearance on Channels Television’s The 2023 Verdict on Tuesday.

“What couldn’t happen in 2015 when the then candidate Buhari asked for any nomination whatsoever from Tinubu – because that configuration has passed. It can no longer work in Nigeria. [A] Muslim-Muslin ticket cannot work anymore,” he added.

Baba-Ahmed pointed out that Nigeria is not like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the Vatican, Iran, Libya or Mauritania, places that are known to be dominated by a particular religion, but a federal republic with over 250 tribes.

He further stated that “out of 18 political parties that presented presidential candidates, 15 have fallen behind.”

He added that of the other three, two have “misconfigured themselves and fallen out of alignment with the dictates of winning elections in Nigeria

Amb. Bianca Ojukwu, Secretary of the 17-Man Truth, Peace, and Justice Commission, has submitted its report on violence in the South-East to Gov. Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra.

The commission was constituted by Soludo to look into the remote and immediate causes of the agitations, restiveness, violence, and struggles in the South East as well as document victims and circumstances of death, brutality, and incarceration.

This is contained in a statement issued by the Secretary of the Commission, Amb. Bianca Ojukwu, on Saturday and made available to the newsmen in Enugu.

The statement said that the “Commission is headed by Prof. Chidi Odinkalu, former Chairman of National Human Rights Commission”.

“The Chairman indicated that the report paints a clear picture that the narrative of the present agitation and violence in the states of the South East is quite complex and not amenable to a single narrative.

“The interim recommendations amongst others include a Bureau of Missing Persons (BMP) within the Ministry of Justice or of Security and Homeland Affairs to document the missing and the disappeared.

“Other recommendations include: professionalization and effective co-ordination of vigilante services in the state, institutionalising deliverables for the Ministry of Security and Homeland Affairs

Establishing an Anambra Integrated Civic Surveillance System as well as establishing an Anambra State Safety and Environmental Commission.

“The commission will commence its public hearings after the election cycle,” it said.

Responding, Gov. Soludo thanked the Chairman and members of the Commission for the good job done so far.

On Sunday, a viral petition bearing the name of Pastor Frank Onwumere and the date December 15, 2022, was sent to the head of the CAN

The petitioner purportedly asserted that some “mega-churches” received the N2 billion from Obi, while smaller denominations were ignored.

Speaking on the allegation, Obi said, “I don’t even have N2 billion. What am I giving the clerics that kind of money for?

“They are clerics and should be praying for the progress of the country.”

The LP presidential candidate added that the clerics’ followers are suffering from bad governance and can only benefit good leadership by voting for him, adding, “They should be the ones to even support my campaign with money so that I can emerge (the winner) and not the other way round.

Again, APC Vice-Presidential Candidate, Shettima Calls Peter Obi ‘Giringori,’ Says Southeast Has More Qualified Persons

Nigerianewslite

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) vice-presidential candidate, Kashim Shettima, has once again referred to the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as ‘Giringori’.

Giringori Akabogu is a comedy character popular in Nigeria in the 1980s in a television show, “New Masquerade”. The character was played by Chief James Iroha who died in February 2012.

The former Borno governor said this at the APC Local Government Summit for Tinubu/Shettima held in Abuja during the weekend. He said the former Anambra governor is not the most qualified candidate from the southeastern region, who should be vying to become the next Nigerian president.

He said, “I believe even in the southeast there are better-qualified people to rule this nation than ‘Giringori’”

He continued: “Honestly, I dare to mention my friend, Owelle Rochas Anayo Okorocha. He was born, bred, birthed and trusted in the north. He speaks Hausa fluently. He made his money in the north and in Lagos.

“We have David Umayi, yes, you can call him a provincial politician, but there is no governor in the southeast that has performed better than David Umahi. Go to Umahi and see the road constructed by David Umahi, then you will come to appreciate this great son of Africa.”

In November 2022, Shettima also called Obi by the appellation during a live TV programme while also describing the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo as a man who should be selling ice cream instead of vying for presidency.

He said, “Osinbajo is a good and nice man but nice men do not make good leaders, nice men should be selling ice cream.

“The training that the elder statesman got from Kano School of Hygiene is that of a ‘wole wole’. And believe me, the ability to sell bottle water does not make one an expert on the economy. Atiku Abubakar is not Abraham Lincoln, he is more of a Raila Odinga.”

“Peter ‘Giringori’ Obi is my friend but Giringori has absolutely nothing to offer.”

Reacting to the comment, the Labour Party described Shettima’s remark as offensive, derogatory and unethical.

The party expressed dissatisfaction with the conduct of Shettima in a statement signed by the then Director-General, the Labour Party Campaign Organisation, Dr Doyin Okupe

CBN Gives Latest Update On Naira Notes After False Claims Emerged

Naria

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has dismissed reports in some quarters claiming that the apex bank is incapable of printing new naira notes.

Naija News recalls that there were reports that the CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele had noted that the apex bank cannot print adequate naira notes to replace the old N200, N500 and 1,000 notes because the Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc (The Mint) is suffering from capacity constraints.

The reports claimed that Emefiele made the disclosure on Friday when he briefed former Nigerian leaders at the emergency meeting of the National Council of State.

A source that spoke with Premium Times disclosed that the Mint had received CBN’s request to print 70 million copies of the new notes.

The source added that the new notes, totaling N126 billion to be pumped into circulation by today.

However, the request of the CBN could not be met because “the Mint doesn’t have the capacity.”

In a statement on Saturday signed by its Director, Corporate Communications, Osita Nwanisobi, the CBN, said, at no time did Emefiele disclose this during his presentation to the National Council of State at its meeting on Friday, February 10, 2023.

The statement reads partly, “For the records, what Mr. Emefiele told the meeting was that the NSPMC was working on printing all denominations of the Naira to meet the transaction needs of Nigerians.

While the CBN appreciates the concerns shown by all stakeholders about the distribution of the Naira, we are alarmed at the extent to which vested interests are attempting to manipulate facts and pitch the public against the Bank.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the CBN remains committed to performing its monetary policy functions, as stipulated in the CBN Act, 2007, as amended. We also wish to restate that the NSPMC has the capacity and enough materials to produce the required indent of the Naira.

“The Bank, therefore, wishes to appeal to the public to disregard the said report and exercise more restraint, even as we work assiduously to increase the circulation of the new notes in the country.

“Similarly, there is a misleading voice note trending in social media alleging that the CBN planned to shut down some banks, particularly in a particular geo-political region of the country.

“We wish to state unequivocally that there is no such plan and that the claims are illogical and do not comply with the workings of the Nigerian banking system.

“The public is therefore advised to ignore such recordings as they do not represent the policy thrust of the CBN and are only the desperate attempts of persons bent on inciting the public against the Bank

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), yesterday, kicked against the closure of public universities by the National Universities Commission (NUC) ahead of the coming election.

In a statement made available to journalists in Ibadan, Oyo State capital, by the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Yisa Temitope Giwa, the decision of the Federal Government through the NUC to close out ivory towers for weeks all in the name of election, is an unfortunate one and does not deserve any applause from right-thinking Nigerians.

The statement reads: ‘’As an association, we have at different fora, maintained that for no reason should our higher institutions of learning be hastily closed in response to certain actions. And, this played out during the heat of the COVID-19 crisis. We condemned the closure of schools.”

‘’For no reason, whatsoever, should academic activities be put on hold, not even at this time that universities are making up for the nine-month ASUU strike. Some of our institutions have tens of polling units on their campuses.”

So, how then would students in these campuses be able to cast their votes when schools are shut down? That is disenfranchisement in itself and we condemn such.

‘’We make our position known that we will never, for any reason, support such irrational action by the Federal Government. Rather, they should allow schools to declare a few days as a break for their students, who would be travelling to their various homes to participate in the election.

“We call on the Federal Government to stop paying lip-service to education. The government must massively invest in education and must not for any reason put academic activities on hold. If the government had invested in the educational sector, there wouldn’t be any need to halt academic activities because of elections, rather, schools would go virtual and the learning process would continue.’’

Supreme Court suspends CBN’s February 10 deadline on old, new naira notes swap

Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a suspension of the deadline for the swapping of old to new Naira notes by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

The Supreme Court issued an interim injunction restraining the Federal Government from suspending the acceptance of the old Naira notes on the Friday February 10, 2023 deadline.

On Monday, Kaduna, Zamfara, and Kogi States instituted a suit against the Federal Government at the Supreme Court over the scarcity of old and new Naira notes due to the CBN naira redesign policy.

The state governments said they are worried about the effects the CBN naira redesign policy is having on the residents of their states.

Consequently, they are seeking a restraining order by the Supreme Court to compel the government and CBN from implementing the policy.

The states filed an ex-parte motion through their lawyer, AbdulHakeem Uthman Mustapha (SAN), and are urging the Supreme Court to grant them an interim injunction stopping the Federal Government either by itself or acting through the CBN, the commercial banks or its agents from carrying out its plan of ending the timeframe within which the now older versions of the 200, 500 and 1000 denominations of the Naira may no longer be legal tender on February 10, 2023.

In the suit marked: SC/CV/162/2023 and filed on February 3, plaintiffs sought a declaration that the demonetisation policy of the federation being currently carried out by the CBN under the directive of the president was not in compliance with the extant provisions of the Constitution and CBN Act, 2007 and actual laws on the subject.

Besides, plaintiffs wanted a declaration that the three-month notice given by the federal government through the CBN under the directive of the president, the expiration of which would render the old banknotes inadmissible as legal tender, is in gross violation of the provisions of Section 20(3) of the CBN Act 2007, which specifies that Reasonable Notice must be given before such a policy.

Similarly, the plaintiffs urged the court to declare that given the express provisions of Section 20(3) of the CBN Act 2007, the federal government through the CBN had no powers to issue a timeline for the acceptance and redeeming of banknotes issued by the bank, except as limited by Section 22(1) of the CBN Act 2007.

The plaintiffs claimed that since the announcement of the policy, there had been an acute shortage in the supply of the new naira notes in Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states, adding that citizens who had dutifully deposited their old naira notes have increasingly found it difficult and sometimes next to impossible to access new naira notes to go about their daily activities.

Plaintiffs in addition cited the inadequacy of the notice coupled with the haphazard manner in which the exercise was being carried out and the attendant hardship same was wrecking on Nigerians, which has been well acknowledged even by the government itself.

The plaintiffs further maintained that the 10-day extension by the federal government was not sufficient to address the challenges bedeviling the policy.

They therefore sought an order of court directing the federal government to immediately suspend the policy until it complies with the relevant provisions of the law.

In an affidavit in support of its own originating summons, the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Kaduna State, Aisha Dikko, who observed that the need to encourage cashless policy was behind the introduction of the naira redesign, stated that not all transactions are however convenient through electronic means.

According to her, several transactions still required cash in exchange for goods and services and as such the government have to allow sufficient money in circulation for the smooth running of the economy.

Besides, the deponent claimed that the federal government has embarked on the policy within a narrow and unworkable time frame, adding that this had adversely affected Nigerian citizens within Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara States as well as their Governments, especially as the newly redesigned naira notes are not available for use by the people as well as the State Governments.

“That the majority of the indigenes of the plaintiffs’ states who reside in the rural areas have been unable to exchange or deposit their old naira notes as there are no banks in the rural

areas where the majority of the population of the states reside.

“Most people in rural areas of the Plaintiffs’ states do not have bank accounts and have so far been unable to deposit their life savings which are still in the old naira notes.

“There is restiveness amongst the people in the various states because of the hardship being suffered by the people, and the situation will sooner than later degenerate into the breakdown of law and order.

“The plaintiff State Governments cannot stand by as they are duty-bound to protect citizens in their states and prevent the breakdown of law and order”, she averred.

While stating that all the current hardship and loss being experienced by the Plaintiffs’ state governments as well as people in the various states would have been avoided if there is sufficient time frame for implementation of the policy, Dikko submitted “that the 10-day extension by the federal government is still insufficient to address the challenges bedeviling the policy.”

NewsWireNGR recalls the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court at Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria to ensure the enforcement of its 10 February deadline on the validity of the old naira notes.

The judge, Eleojo Enenche, gave the order on Monday in a ruling on an ex parte application by four opposition political parties.

The four parties – Action Alliance (AA), Action Peoples Party (APP), Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and National Rescue Movement (NRM) – in their application alleged that the CBN’s new monetary policy was being sabotaged by Nigerian banks.

They sued President Muhammadu Buhari, the CBN and the CBN governor, Godwin Emefiele, along with 25 Nigerian banks as defendants.

In a public announcement last week, the CBN governor, Mr Emefiele, extended the deadline for legal tender status of the old N200, N500 and N1000 notes from 31 January to 10 February.

The extension followed a public outcry that greeted the scarcity of the new naira banknotes. The CBN governor announced the extension after meeting with President Buhari, and directed banks to receive the old bank notes even after the deadline.
