A Call to Halt the Supposed 25% Tax Increase By Nigerian Government

Nigerianewslite

The widespread alleged reports and public anxiety surrounding a purported 25% tax increase demand immediate, unambiguous clarification and an absolute rejection from the highest levels of leadership. At a moment when millions of Nigerians are grappling with unprecedented inflationary pressures, soaring energy costs, and the severe erosion of household purchasing power, even the mere contemplation of an added 25% tax burden is both economically reckless and deeply insensitive. The Nigerian public cannot absorb further financial shocks, and any attempt to extract additional revenue from already exhausted citizens risks triggering deep economic distress across every state in the federation.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's administration must recognize that imposing or permitting a tax structure of this magnitude will fundamentally destroy what remains of the nation's middle class and push millions deeper into abject poverty. Small and medium-sized enterprises—the bedrock of Nigeria's employment landscape—are already shuttering operations due to prohibitive overheads, currency volatility, and declining consumer demand. Introducing a heavy tax expansion under these precarious conditions will suppress local investment, accelerate job losses, and force businesses into the informal sector or out of the country entirely, effectively strangling the economy the more.

If such a proposal exists within any legislative draft, executive policy framework, or strategic blueprint, the administration must shove it aside permanently. The federal government must prioritize policy clarity, fiscal discipline, and genuine economic relief over aggressive revenue targets that penalize the vulnerable. We call on President Tinubu to issue an explicit, binding commitment assuring the public that no such policy will see the light of day, as such will deepen public hardship.
